London has done well out of Nobu, with Marylebone’s modern Japanese Dinings and Soho ramen shop Bone Daddies both products of its graduates. But neither are Nobu clones, whereas Wabi is, and suffers by comparison…

The BBQ grill set (…) was just lovely. Skewers of soft sliced onions dipped in a powerful miso dressing, delicately boned chicken wings with a perfect crispy skin, a good dollop of powerfully-smoked aubergine salsa, and the most wonderfully cooked (if slightly underseasoned) lamb chops that were just so addictively tender I stripped them clean to the bone in seconds…

The Bento Lunch (…) – in the range and quality of the dishes – is one of the most ambitious we can recall (…) The box comprised a range of sushi, and of sashimi, and some cooked fish, as well as a very tasty chicken pancake-sandwich and a bowl of miso soup. If that doesn’t sound very filling, it wasn’t, but the attention to detail, the tastes and the textures were impressive throughout…

Although some startlingly fresh, high quality fish is used in the sushi and sashimi, the portion sizes are miserly. Meanwhile, my desserts were hilariously ill-conceived and the less said about some of the deliriously bad hot savoury dishes the better…
