A table at the world's #1 restaurant (but not anytime soon)

Posted on: June 1, 2013

El Celler de Can Roca - world's best restaurant

It was never easy to get a table at El Celler de Can Roca in Girona. But since the restaurant won the title of ‘World’s Best Restaurant’ at the World’s 50 Best Restaurant awards 2013, it requires proper long term planning.

As Eater reports, the restaurant only accepts reservations 11 months in advance. The next 11 months are fully booked, but bookings for May 2014 are taken from today on +34 972 222 157.

Follow us on twitter or tumblr to keep up to date with all the restaurant awards that count (from London to Asia).

Flynn McGarry - celebrity chef

Californian celebrity chef Flynn McGarry discovered his love for cooking as a child. At eleven, he was fascinated by Thomas Keller’s French Laundry cookbook. This was three years ago.

Now 14 years old, Flynn runs his monthly supper club Eureka at lauded Los Angeles restaurant BierBeisl and has been in the media spotlight, from a profile in Newsweek (Daily Beast) to an appearance on the Today Show with Daniel Boulud.

Flynn’s dishes are subtle and feature high quality ingredients. A recent 11-course menu at Eureka featured salsify with buttermilk, almond, pear and thyme, as

StageScan

Aggregating critic opinions for plays and shows

FoodVerdicts strongly believes in two premises: expert knowledge is superior, and more experts give a truer representation than fewer.

We were therefore more than excited when we recently met the founder of StageScan, a website which does essentially the same for theatres what we do for restaurants. StageScan collects the latest critic reviews for new plays and shows, and allows you to follow specific directors, actors, or theatre companies.

7-minute workout

The benefits of regular exercise are well known but sometimes our busy lives (or a good meal) get in the way of a long run or workout. High Intensity Circuit Training (HITC) can provide a solution - aerobic and resistance training are combined in a high-intensity, limited-rest workout, delivering health benefits in much less time.

A new article in the May/June edition of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal provides a practical 7-minute workout based on scientific evidence. The 12 exercises utilise your own body weight and require no equipment (other

Ape & Bird pub London

Russell Norman and Richard Beatty – the restaurateurs behind Polpo, Spuntino and Mishkin’s – will open a West End pub in October, on the site of the old Marquis of Granby just off Shaftesbury Avenue.

Ape & Bird will open in October, and will be run as a pub, but with an all day food offer.

As Norman told Caterer News: ““Diners can expect oysters just as you would get in a 20th century Irish boozer. We’re also really keen to get some great nursery comfort dishes on the menu (…). It’s the sort of food that I like to eat.”

Observer Food Monthly - 20 best restaurants of the decade

To celebrate their 10 year anniversary, the Observer Food Monthly Awards (with Jay Rayner at the helm) have selected their “20 best restaurants of the decade” – half of them in London.

How were they selected?

“No big names make it in just for being so. They still have to be serving up great, interesting food. In the end, I came up with a simple test: did writing about the restaurant make me hungry? In each case, yes.”

Along with about 200 other awards and  expert reviewers, this selection is picked up by the FoodVerdicts algorithm and has lifted the Verdicts of London

Cook it Raw – The world's best chefs go back to the basics

Claude Bosi - Cook It Raw

Cook It Raw brings together a small group of the world’s best chefs to some of the most remote locations in the world. The mission? Cook only with what you find in the natural environment around you and with only the bare essentials – your hands, a knife and some fire. The initiative is meant to inspire culinary innovation whilst addressing environmental, social and cultural issues.

There is something very inspirational about the movement’s guiding principles:

Environment – “Foraging connects us back to our land-based identity”

A. Wong – the power of the restaurant review

A Wong reviews

Since A. Wong opened in an unpromising location in Victoria, it has hardly flown under the radar. The FoodVerdicts database lists 11 expert reviews, of which 8 YAYs, which mostly praise the creative Chinese dishes served up in the 8 course ‘Taste of China’ menu as well as on the dim sum menu (available to order as single pieces – a relief if you were always too polite to snatch that last xiao long bao).

But this weekend, A. Wong won the jackpot of restaurant reviews – praise from two of the most influential critics in the business – Marina O’Loughlin (Guardian)
