Michelin New York

Michelin’s 2015 Bib Gourmand list for New York is out. Every restaurant on the list offers two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less.

For many observers the most intriguing of the Michelin lists, the “Bib” often includes up and coming restaurants to complement the more established ‘starry’ establishments. This year, newcomers include Laotian-inspired Khe-Yo, East Village Italian Bar Primi and many more.

Plan your next trip with the full 2015 Michelin list and follow FoodVerdicts on Twitter to stay up to date with the restaurant scene in London

Hoi Polloi restaurant Ace Hotel

The arrival of Ace Hotel in London, was highly anticipated by fans of the hip Ace Hotel in New York (which is also the venue of April Bloomfield’s Breslin restaurant). Ace London is located on Shoreditch High Street – check out hotelchatter for pics and an opening night review.

To come up with a new restaurant concept, Ace turned to Pablo Flack and David Waddington, the people behind Shrimpy’s and Bistrotheque. Shake Shack

BurgerMonday event impresario and food writer, Daniel Young (Young & Foodish) knows New York’s food scene like few people else here in London. A former restaurant critic in the city, he has closely observed Danny Meyer’s ascent over the years. It’s only fitting then that Daniel helped organise a launch event for the recent Shake Shack opening.

In a very detailed article on his blog, Daniel describes the “Meyer Touch” and helps us understand why Meyer’s restaurants have consistently been voted Manhattan’s favourite restaurants.

Food bloggers and the fickle restaurant scene

Influece of restaurant reviews and blogs

Josh Ozersky has a thing or two to say about the New York food scene. He’s been writing about restaurants for more than 20 years and was the founding editor of New York Magazine’s successful food blog Grub Street.

Ozersky penned a controversial article for the New York Observer, talking about the high-pressure food blog scene and their pervasive influence on restaurateurs.

Enter the cronut (our picture). A half-croissant, half-donut creation of Dominique Ansel Bakery in Soho, NY. Delicious, certainly, but Ozersky writes:

“Now do a Google News search for cronuts. You’ll

Daily Meal 101 Best Restaurants in America

The Daily Meal website today published their list of the 101 best restaurants in America, determined by a panel of 174 restaurateurs, food writers and bloggers.

Three well known destination restaurants top the list: Thomas Keller’s French Laundry in California followed by Gramercy Tavern and Le Bernardin in New York.

But the list is remarkable for giving casual restaurants a chance to compete with fine dining temples (we at FoodVerdicts believe in this approach as well) – and as a result, institutions like Per Se (NYC) or Alinea (Chicago) find themselves ranked behind #11 Shake

Taking pictures in restaurants

Last week, the New York Times sparked a familiar discussion with their article about whether it is polite/ necessary/ unforgivable to take pictures of your food. For New York visitors who like to take a snap the conclusion seems to be: go to Per Se, stay away from Momofuku Ko.

Presciently, Grub Street had already written about the topic in June 2011, which allowed them to reuse the same stock image (faithfully reproduced here) this time around. Their conclusion: “If you must, heed the remaining guidelines: Use no tripods, no flash; like Hippocrates and that split-personalities guy on
