World's 50 Best restaurants 2013

The annual gala for the World’s 50 Best Restaurants just ended and the new list is out with a new number one and a certain bald Brit in the top 10 again.

Every year Restaurant Magazine assembles a global panel of over 900 restaurant experts to determine who deserves a spot on the list. You can find the full list of 100 restaurants (not just 50) on the official website, but we have the highlights for you:

A new ‘Best restaurant in the World’

The three Roca brothers and their restaurant El Celler de Can Roca in Girona (Spain) takes the crown from Rene Redzepi’s Noma, a three-time winner.

Not a lot of new faces in the top 10…

Many familiar names near the top of the list: the global chef royalty including Arzak, Roca, Blumenthal, and Bottura have put down roots and it seems increasingly hard for newcomers to reach the top tier.

…but a German contender impresses

Joachim Wissler, head chef at Vendôme in Bergisch Gladbach and pioneer of the creative “Neue Deutsche Küche”, takes a huge leap from No. 23 to No. 10 this year. Check out his website for some pictures of his breathtaking creations.

Some big names tumble

Of course anybody who makes it onto this exclusive list has a lot to be proud of, but we’re sure the big name chefs that gathered in London still don’t want to see their restaurants drop in the rankings. This year, US destination restaurants Alinea and Per Se (both out of the top 10) as well as our own Fat Duck in Bray (down from No. 13 to No. 33) had to suffer losses.

And in London? Dinner, Ledbury and more

Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental is the highest ranked restaurant in the UK up at No. 7 (from No. 9 last year). The Ledbury is at No. 13 (from No. 14 last year).

A major success for Mikael Jonsson’s Hedone, which comes in at No. 70, only a few months after being awarded its first Michelin Star. Viajante (No. 59), St John (No. 71) and Pollen Street Social (No. 84) are recognised as well.

Of course the Verdict of all the London winners will benefit as well.

And finally: the full top 10

1. El Celler de Can Roca, Girona (Spain)

2. Noma, Copenhagen (Denmark)

3. Osteria Francescana, Modena (Italy)

4. Mugaritz, San Sebastián (Spain)

6. D.O.M., São Paulo (Brazil)

7. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, London (UK)

8. Arzak, San Sebastián (Spain)

9. Steirereck, Vienna (Austria)

10. Vendôme, Bergisch Gladbach (Germany)
